It’s almost everything we want in a PC shooter. DICE’s latest instalment in the Battlefield series sets the bar – we just wish there were more developers trying to surpass it.

Even now, the internet ionises as gamers prepare to take sides in what will no doubt be a forum-flaming battle of rampant fanboyism. Be assured: digital faeces will be flung; someone will say “no u”; moderators will stay up late wearily wading through the yapping and the dung as if they were the proprietors of a Chihuahua kennel with global reach. But when it comes to the PC, there is no elephant in the room. Last year’s woefully disappointing console port of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to the PC bears no comparison to DICE’s latest instalment in the Battlefield series.

A standout success on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Modern Warfare 2 barely scrapped the grade on PC.
Of more interest is the development history of each franchise. Call of Duty’s origins has been decidedly cross-platform, formerly with a nod to the capabilities of PC. Battlefield existed exclusively on monitors until Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was released on consoles.

The original Bad Company followed three years later as a console exclusive. Now, after an absence of four years from the PC market (the free-to-play Heroes aside), DICE has brought its console offshoot back home.

But the lack of any credible competitor on the PC is hardly a blessing for gamers. Should the Swedish developers deliver a mediocre experience, the PC market could be left waiting up to nine months for Treyarch’s Call of Duty 7 – a franchise that has already left the PC community once-bitten.

Fortunately, DICE’s PC offering feels like the return of the prodigal son. Divided into a singleplayer campaign and online multiplayer, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 for the PC’s enhanced features should allay any concerns that the title would merely be a glossy port.

Bad Company 2 features dedicated servers. The server browser includes a variety of filters such as “not full” and “not empty” and includes a name search. A friends list helps players to find their friends online and join the same game.

There are four caveats: There is no prone, crouch cannot be toggled, and iron-sighting is toggle-only, health is still not displayed on the user interface. But for those of you who played the PC beta, rejoice: Pings and your kill-death ratio are now displayed on the scoreboard, alongside points earned. Hit registration, already patched in the beta client, appears sounder still.

The multiplayer is spread over eight maps (10 once you’ve cashed in your Project 10 Dollar VIP voucher – 12 come late March). For those left snow-blind by the Alaskan Port Valdez map of the beta, the full release takes players globetrotting from that frigid north to the stunning jungles and deserts of South America. Each is finely balanced for team multiplayer and all are realised as a carefully crafted corner of nature that war has imposed itself upon.

This comes courtesy of DICE’s Destruction 2.0. Its country cousin made its awkward debut in the original Bad Company on consoles and bears little comparison to the 2010 iteration. Aside from truly imposing structures such as pipelines and temples, all battlefields can be completely levelled. Jungle foliage crashes, huts and abandoned houses collapse in on themselves.

Destruction 2.0 means that no two encounters play out quite the same way. Moreover, how players must approach and appreciate cover has been redrafted. A wooden fence is no protection against assault rifle fire, to say nothing of an RPG. It can take some getting used to, especially since the condition of your shelter must be judged on purely aesthetic measures and if it collapses on you, you’ll die, but it’s a significant step forward, and one that makes its competitors' pristine, inviolate settings outmoded.

There are four classes to choose from in multiplayer: assault, medic, engineer and scout. Each has advantages corresponding to their roles, as they always have. The game’s levelling system is finely balanced, offering players more options as they level up specific classes. The item upgrades unlocked while levelling offer varying advantages that largely cater to different play-styles rather than wholesale advantages over lower-level players – as it should be in a first-person shooter, this isn’t World of Battlefield.

There are four multiplayer modes. Rush, on display in the beta, sets the offensive team a phasing series of objectives to destroy on a more linear map. Squad Rush pits two smaller teams against one another, without vehicles, and with only two objectives. Squad Deathmatch pits four squads against one another, but Battlefield’s defining open-play game mode, Conquest, returns unspoiled.

The whole package is tied together by unparalleled audio. Feet crunch twigs, a shell obliterating the concrete wall you’re sheltering behind leaves your speakers ringing with a tinnitus sample that would make Ridley Scott dribble. As a matter of fact, the game’s sound has been designed by Dolby digital, the same suite behind Blackhawk Down.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is DirectX 9 and 10 compatible, and features some small DirectX 11 enhancements, including soft shadowmap filtering. It does not support DX11 multithreading however, which is arguably the latest version’s most advantageous feature. That said, Bad Company 2 visually pleasing. DICE are less fanatical about graphical bloom effects than many – sun strike occlusion is inoffensive.

The singleplayer campaign is a witty, kitsch action tale that sees the return of B Company as they unravel a Russian military plot involving a secret weapon engineered by the Japanese in the closing days of World War II. The prologue, featuring American GI’s extracting a Japanese scientist at the end of the Second World War, is some small acknowledgement of the series’ first title, Battlefield 1942. It’s also a pleasant tease as to what we can expect when the oft-delayed Battlefield 1943 hits PCs.

Bad Company 2 is composed of the same strong-willed characters that headlined the original Bad Company game. Their comic banter punctuates the casual story and is peppered with some none-too-subtle digs at Modern Warfare 2’s more “grim visaged” take on contemporary combat. No controversial scenes here.

You play as the mute Marlowe. Your squad companions leave something to be desired once the action begins, however. They’re invincible, which is terribly convenient, but belief is often suspended as they nonchalantly brush off a shell taken to the chest. They’re also horrible shots next to your one-man army. They do cause an awful racket however, and draw enough fire to let you use the terrain to your advantage.

Enemy AI is middling. They display environmental awareness but a poor understanding of its newly-destructible nature, nor are they particularly cooperative with one another.

It’s hard to care. It would be easy to quibble about AI faults in the singleplayer if it served any greater purpose than being an entertaining distraction for players when the multiplayer servers run quiet. We doubt that will happen for quite some time. DICE have reinvigorated a genre that was in mild decline on its native platform. The experience is equal parts nostalgia and evolution. We only wish more were striving in this space

.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - Review tag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-03-03:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Review2010-03-03T00:44:19+00:002010-03-03T00:44:19+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews
If you're looking for an online multiplayer game that you can play with friends for months on end, "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" is an excellent choice.

It's been almost half a year since "Modern Warfare 2" hit store shelves, and while it remains the most played online shooter right now, many are starting to look elsewhere for their online FPS fix. Elsewhere, in this case, is "Battlefield: Bad Company 2."

The Basics

"Battlefield: Bad Company 2" is really two games in one. The single-player game is a heavily scripted, mostly linear first-person shooter which features a squad of ne'er-do-wells as they try to save the world from a devastating weapon.

The multiplayer game is another beast entirely. It consists of objective-centric multiplayer modes which pit teams against each other to capture important points on the map. There's also persistent character advancement, as you'll unlock weapons and new equipment as you play.

The Highs

The Multiplayer Modes
There are only four multiplayer modes in "Bad Company 2" but each of them are created in such a way that they engender teamwork, even among strangers. Conquest is the traditional "Battlefield" mode, which has two teams fighting over control of several points scattered across a massive map. Rush is similar, but it's more of an attack/defend style, where there are only two points that must be captured and once they are the map shifts back to the next line of defense. The other two modes are Squad Rush (a smaller version of Rush which is infantry only, 4v4 maps) and Squad Deathmatch (standard deathmatch, but with multiple teams of 4 squad members…or 4v4v4v4).

Each of the modes has its own pace and tactics, but none of them feel tacked on or unnecessary. I often found myself jumping from one to the other, and all of them felt satisfying and worthwhile.

Persistent Character Advancement
As you play online you'll earn points for getting kills, capturing objectives, repairing vehicles, so on and so forth. Depending on your class, those points will unlock new guns and equipment. Unlike "Modern Warfare 2," the class you play will determine which unlocks you get first, so there's almost an RPG-lite system at work in "Bad Company 2." A similar system was at work in the first "Bad Company," but this time around it feels streamlined and way more addictive.

Building Destruction
The destruction system from the first "Bad Company" has been improved to allow buildings to fully collapse, whereas before they would just be left as foundation skeletons. Apart from looking cool, this plays a huge part in multiplayer, as you can take out objectives by attacking them directly or simply by collapsing the building around them.

The Lows

The Single-Player Campaign
Unfortunately, while some improvements were made to the single-player campaign, it remains…lacking. Frankly it feels like a "Modern Warfare 2" knock-off, but the visuals and gameplay are simply not on par with Infinity Ward's effort. It's also surprisingly linear for a "Battlefield" game, forcing you into funneled maps and objectives rather than letting you pick your point of attack. The first time you actually make a choice of where you want to go first is 5 hours into the game, and that choice doesn't affect the way the mission plays out in any way. You're better off looking at the single-player in "Bad Company 2" as an added bonus on top of the multiplayer, but it's definitely not worthwhile on its own.

Selective Destruction
It's great that you can bring an entire house down and all, but it's less great when the game decides which walls can come down and which can't. For example, walls with ladders? Nope, they're indestructible. Even if you've blown out ever other wall in the building, the wall with the ladder will remain, taunting you. Not very satisfying.

The Verdict

If you're looking for an online multiplayer game that you can play with friends for months on end, "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" is an excellent choice. It's addictive, entertaining and fosters cooperation way more than its competitors. If you're just looking for a single-player FPS, though, "Bad Company 2" isn't much more than a mindless romp, a strictly middle-of-the-road experience. If you're looking for a little of both, though, it's an easy recommendation to make.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 TV Commercial Videotag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-02-27:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-TV-Commercial2010-02-27T15:27:53+00:002010-02-27T15:27:53+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews
In case you didn't see it yet..... the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 TV Commercial Video.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Demo Tutorial Videotag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-02-11:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Tutorial-video2010-02-11T17:21:45+00:002010-02-11T17:21:45+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews

A lot has been happening in Battlefield Universe this week and we wanted to wrap it all up in one nice post just in-case you missed something of interest.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Today we released a tutorial video of the Demo map "Port Valdez" Battlefield Bad Company 2 Demo Video with VO by me. What's up there?

A little background
Since the Frostbite engine had not yet been used for any PC titles, there had been no need for advanced server administration tools. BFBC2 PC changed that however. There was a sort of "server console" thing, but it was intended for developer use only. Something easier to use and more stable was necessary when we came closer to release it to the PC users.

So what are we doing?
We are creating a separate command console, which is stable, and where the commands will not change. This will be the Remote Administration interface for BFBC2 PC. BF2 console commands have been a good source of inspiration. The Remote Administration interface is accessible over a network port on the game server.

While we ensure that there is a solid administration interface, we are not creating any fancy tools. Why not? Because the community will do a much better job! RSPs have already been using the interface for weeks, and several people are working on user friendly tools. We will continue to improve the protocol with functions that are necessary to make good tools.

When Closed Beta Server R5 (yes, we have already patched the game servers 3 times. I love our new patching system) is released, the RSPs will be allowed to expose the Remote Administration interface on their servers to the public... and we will publish the FULL protocol specification. You have my word on that.

... ah! Closed Beta Server R5 is going out to the RSPs now, It should gradually roll deploy over the course of the day. Here is the protocol. When the protocol changes in future versions of the server, we will release the protocol updates as well.
Review - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC Beta tag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-02-09:/article.php/Bad-Company-2-PC-Beta-Review2010-02-09T21:53:19+00:002010-02-09T21:53:19+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews
By Florian Totu

DICE has kick-started its Battlefield: Bad Company 2 closed beta trial for the PC and I was lucky enough to get my greedy hands on a beta key. Special combat actions award you additional experience points, like a certain amount of kills with one weapon in a single round or special class actions like a certain amount of resurrects with the Medic or repairs with the Engineer.

The other huge thing the game has going for itself is the physics engine. To put it simply, if you can see it, then you can destroy it. If there's an enemy sniper hiding in a small forest, you can cut that down with a machine gun fire or explosives and leave him in a barren plain. If there's an anti-tank team hiding in a building, you can make a hole anywhere you want and rip them apart.

If you don't have a clear shot at your adversary, take a step back, throw a grenade and make a hole, cover problem solved. The downside is that you're never safe. Hiding on the top floor of a building and sniping at your enemies can end in a 40mm grenade flash, as you'll soon run out of walls to hide behind.

Bad Company 2's Rush mode separates players in Defenders and Attackers, with the offensive team having to destroy two crates before they can advance to the next set of two crates, and eventually win the round. Anybody can set timed charges on the crates, but these charges can also be defused by anyone. And while this is a universal solution, available to all classes, there are better ways to win the round.

If the crate is in a building, you can man a tank and put enough rounds in that building to make it collapse, as certain buildings will destroy the crate as the roof drops. If it's in the open, you can take direct shots at it, or call strikes and mortars down on it. Last but not least, Recons can place remote charges on the crate and destroy it in two goes, or even one, if they have the appropriate upgrades.

Overall, the beta for the game announces a chaotic and frantic multiplayer, but one in which PUGs manage to organize pretty easily. It's in an Engineer's personal interest to repair a vehicle, since he gets additional experience points, just like the Medic, who gets bonus points for every resurrection or health that he restores. But when it's not about the team, and it's just about you, walls disappearing from explosions and buildings collapsing under your feet can make for a very intense moment.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Will Revisit World War IItag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-02-09:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-World-War-II2010-02-09T21:47:26+00:002010-02-09T21:47:26+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews

by J. Think again.

It's somewhat of a truth self-evident these days: World War II games have been done to death. Storming the beach at Normandy is old hat; raising the flag on Iwo Jima is yawn-inducing. Almost every major FPS series is moving away from battling the Third Reich these days, whether moving into the realm of modern-day combat (Modern Warfare, Medal of Honor) or other historical campaigns (Treyarch's rumored Vietnam-era Call of Duty). EA Dice's upcoming Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is no exception, set squarely on the battlefields of the modern day ...

According to the ESRB explanation of the game's "M for Mature" rating, BFBC2 will actually start out during the Pacific Campaign of the Second World War before jumping through time to the modern day: "In single-player mode, players conduct missions on an unnamed Japanese island during World War II and then move into the modern day through jungles, deserts, and snowy terrain."

One can't help but wonder if the WW2 missions will tie into the game's plot somehow, or if they're just there because Dice was all "Oh hey, we still like WW2, let's put something in there."

The ESRB explanation also contains this little tidbit about the game's M rating beyond the standard violence, swearing, etc. "There are also close-up depictions of knife-stabbing (flesh-impact sounds) and melee attacks with a power drill." Okay, I think I'm just about sold on the game now. Power drill melee combat? That's kind of awesome.

Still can't get the beta to work on my PC without swapping constantly between a psuedo-windowed mode and full-screen. I know here at DICE there is much enjoying, but not without collecting a lot of great feedback from the PC Beta. Now with all this Multiplayer goodness we wanted to give some Singleplayer love for this post. So far feedback from the Press warrants this love and has been very positive making the team feel very proud of their work. We're also extremely excited for the first ever Battlefield PC title to contain a proper Singleplayer campaign! A few weeks ago, their CEO John Riccitiello said he wanted to take the "leadership position in FPS" away from the "Call of Duty" series. Now, one of his colleagues is calling for a crown to accompany "Battlefield: Bad Company 2" when it comes out this year.

"In March we will launch 'Battlefield: Bad Company 2,' which is our first strong attack on 'Call Of Duty,'" EA Europe senior VP Jens Uwe told MCV Magazine. "The shooter space is one we don't want to give up. It's an important genre and we were the number one. So we are certainly working on how we can get that crown back and 'Battlefield: Bad Company 2' is an important product in that context."

Riccitiello previously pointed to the "Battlefield" and "Medal of Honor" franchises as candidates to oust "MW2" from its current throne.

"If any of our studios can take on 'Modern Warfare,' then it's DICE," UWE said.

Uwe's comments are clearly echoes of Riccitiello's statements, but EA is clearly staying on message. Reviving the "Battlefield" brand and positioning their games to achieve "MW2" numbers may be a longterm goal that takes them past March, though stranger success stories have happened.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 PC Beta Update tag:www.mapmodnews.com,2010-01-12:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-PC-Beta2010-01-12T02:04:11+00:002010-01-12T02:04:11+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews
by GordonVanDyke

As promised here is the PC Blog on the Beta & a few other things, yes some people, places, and things may have leaked a little something, but we are here to clarify everything and make it all official since we can now commit to the listed dates !

BETA Details:

Beta Begins/Ends

Jan 28th/Feb 25th

Map Name

Port Valdez

Players

32

Game Mode

Rush

Environment

Snow

Theme

Vehicle and Infantry

Back Story

The battle for Port Valdez is fought alongside the waterline towards a great oil industrial landscape in the Alaskan mountains. Those post-headshot cackles of glee shouldn't be letting up anytime soon, because a number of intriguing shooters are slated for release in early 2010. One of the most promising of the bunch is DICE's Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a game we've had our eye on for quite some time. Previously, we've covered some of the new vehicles you can expect to see on the snowy Port Valdez map, and we've detailed the new class customization options on the dusty Arica Harbour map. Our most recent look at Bad Company 2 gave us a chance to see two new locales and a new gameplay mode: Squad Deathmatch.

As the name implies, Squad Deathmatch is a twist on the most basic of shooter modes. The difference here is that it's not a free-for-all, nor is it a one-team-versus-the-other situation. Instead, it's four teams of four all duking it out to be the first squad to reach 50 total kills. It makes for quite a different style of combat and a much more tense and unnerving experience. Even if you manage to survive an encounter with an opponent from one squad, you never know if there's a member of another squad just waiting in the bushes for the right moment to pull mop-up duty. You also feel much more connected to your squadmates knowing that it's four of you, and 12 of them.

Another thing that makes Squad Deathmatch interesting is the way certain endgame scenarios change your play style. Say your squad and another squad are both tied at 45 total kills, with the other two teams so far behind that they're basically out of the competition. Suddenly, the strategy becomes seeking out the losing squads and trying to avoid the one that's close to you in total kills. Who cares if you die while going after the weak guys? They're already out of it. But a death against the team that's tied with you suddenly matters a whole lot more. There's also one single tank in Squad Deathmatch that acts as a sort of centerpiece for the action, allowing one team to both go on a rampage and signal to the other teams with a very loud voice where they are and where they can be killed. Overall, Squad Deathmatch adds a few very interesting risk-reward dynamics to the usual Deathmatch formula.

We played Squad Deathmatch on the new Laguna Presa map, an area set in a vibrant jungle where a series of small islands are separated by knee-deep pools and streams. This map has a lot of small patches of foliage to hide in, as well as a number of rickety wooden buildings that don't provide a whole lot of protection from incoming gunfire. This map is a stark departure from previous Bad Company 2 maps we've seen, which were set in snowy Alaska and parts of arid South America. We also got to play on another new map called Panama Canal, which is a shipping yard set on the famous maritime passageway in Central America. This industrial-themed map offers a demolished collection of rusted freighter boats and shipping cans and gives you the chance to cruise around in several tanks and quad ATVs.

On the Panama Canal map, we played that old Battlefield standby known as Conquest mode. As fans of the series will recall, this mode sees two teams fighting for capture points spread across the map. The first team to exhaust its total number of respawns loses, and the point of maintaining capture points is that they offer a boost to the total number of respawns your team has left. In contrast to the measured jungle-stalking of the Laguna Presa map, we found Panama Canal to be a more frenetic and explosive experience. With the ATVs zooming around and the capture points serving as magnets for a flurry of incoming grenades, this map and mode certainly felt a lot more chaotic than Squad Deathmatch on Laguna Presa.

We've seen Bad Company 2 several times now, and we've had fun with it every time we've picked up a controller. The large-scale maps, destructible buildings, and vehicle options make for a fun and varied experience that allows you to pursue victory from a number of different angles. Whether you play as a rooftop sniper, a tank driver, or a deranged medic running around zapping enemies to death with defibrillator paddles, there's a lot of room to play how you want. Bad Company 2 is due out March 2.
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Panama Canal Multi Player Map tag:www.mapmodnews.com,2009-12-17:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Panama-Canal-2009-12-17T22:28:28+00:002009-12-17T22:28:28+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews
by jockyitch

EA has just put up a new Battlefield: Bad Company 2 MP map. The original Battlefield was a solid and nicely accomplished FPS and developer DICE has already said to expect a bigger and better sequel. Although the entire world seems to be MW2-crazy right now, EA wants to remind everyone that somewhere, lurking in the background shadows, they've got a project that might just surprise you with its bad-ass-ness. According to PS3Center citing a Q2 conference call with Riccitiello, the EA boss said- "I think [Bad Company 2] has every right to see itself as a rival to the number one FPS game that one of one of our competitors is releasing next week." Ironically, there was a time back in 2007 when PS3 owners were really down on EA (for a variety of reasons) but now, Activision is in the doghouse and EA has really produced some stellar titles this generation.

In addition to Battlefield: Bad Company, we've also seen Mirror's Edge and Dead Space, so we have every confidence that BC2 is gonna be awesome. Also, let's not forget that the beta kicks off on November 19 and that test will be exclusive to the PS3. Betcha don't hate EA much now, do ya?
Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Squad Story Two Trailertag:www.mapmodnews.com,2009-11-08:/article.php/Battlefield-Bad-Company-2-Squad-video2009-11-08T14:46:23+00:002009-11-08T14:46:23+00:00Admin-Mapmodnews

Watch the Russians mount a counterattack against the Americans in the conquest game mode which Battlefield pioneered.
