South African videogame importer and distributor, Megarom Interactive, has today announced the effects of the global price increase for the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the local African market.
While it’s already been announced that the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 would see a price hike in the US and UK, at $59.99 and £44.99 respectively, today we know what kind of knock-on effect these price increases have on the South African gamers.
South African PC gamers can expect to pay a recommended retail price (RRP) of R499.99 on release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, while prices for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game remain at R699.99 each.
Not very good news for PC gamers, then, as the previous price announced for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 was R399, which some may have already considered expensive....
Analyst Michael Pachter reckons Activision's controversial decision to raise the price of Modern Warfare 2 has nothing to do with the changed valuta market. ( Dollar vs Euro vs Pound )
"The price increase is a business decision. Activision knows it has a 'hot' game, knows that the market will pay an additional 10 per cent, and has decided to increase price accordingly."
And, he added: "The repercussions could be significant and lasting. If Activision is successful, we may see increases for other 'hot' games in the future. "
What does Activision have to say? "I'm afraid we don't comment on our product pricing strategies" .
So lets hope that what we buy this time is really worth all that extra money....
