The confirmation came via Phil Harrisson, a corporate vice president of Microsoft and member of the company’s Interactive Entertainment Team. In an interview Harrisson was asked whether there would ever be an Xbox One without Kinect. His answer was very clear: “Xbox One is Kinect. They are not separate systems.”
Kinect will always be shipped as standard with the Xbox One.
Microsoft is viewing Kinect the same way it views the Blu-ray drive, controller, and components inside the box; they are all a core part of the experience required to make Xbox One work. You can argue that a motion controller doesn’t have to be counted the same way, but Microsoft would clearly disagree.
Harrisson isn’t new to games having been in the industry since 1989, and has had long stints working at Sony, Atari, Gaikai, and now Microsoft. He says he has an Xbox One at home and that the ability to talk to the console to get it to turn on and recognize you is “a very magical experience.”
Kinect may be great for voice recognition and identifying who is holding a controller, but Microsoft has yet to convince everyone about its use for games. It doesn’t seem like a must-have peripheral, but that doesn’t seem to matter, Microsoft is insisting you have one.
