Modern Warfare 2 : IWNet/Demonware crashes and STEAM connection problems.
After all of the hype and build up to the launch of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, within minutes the online connection servers went down for the Playstation 3. With more than 100,000 players trying to log on simultaneously, the Demonware master servers just crashed.
Back in 2005 when DemonWare (Irish company; now owned by Activision) proudly announced they would make the middleware toolset for Mircosoft's Xbox360, they said :
"DemonWare will set new standards in the online experience and DemonWares' ground breaking network middleware will play a big role in that."
And Demonware kept its promise. For years now Demonware is the most ANNOYING factor when it comes to Call of Duty Online Multiplayer. Struggling to keep their master servers up and keep all players connected.
And so the Call of Duty: World at War release in 2008 started off with the Demonware servers crashing. After that the contant losing of Player Profiles, due to connection loss on Demonware's end, kept being the biggest problem for PS3 and PC gamers for months !
Now in 2009, with Modern Warfare 2, Demonware steals the show again. And for the MW2 PC version gamedeveloper Infinity Ward even added an extra: STEAM. And from day one till now; both services are giving such high amount of daily downtime (overload crashes, connection loss and maintenance updates) so ALL players already got HOURS of waiting and trying to play the MW2 game online.
- The MW2 Xbox version is doing ok. The master servers were able to cope with the reported 2 million players connected at the same time on release day. But still lots of connection issues are reported. Plus players still spending more time in a lobby waiting then actually playing some online MW2 Multiplayer. The Matchmaking service is failing to bring players from same global area together. Players experiencing lag from this.
- Already mentioned; the MW2 Playstation 3 Demonware Master Servers crashed on the day of the release and a few times on the following days. Demonware had to add (?) servers to meet the demand and it took a full day to get the multiplayer back working again. It is still a mystery WHY Demonware wasn't prepared for this HUGE number of, mostly pre-ordered, copies to go on online. Second problem is also Matchmaking. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. The lag can be horrific at times, which cause a domino effect of other problems like hit detection etc. But that is only WHEN YOU CAN CONNECT to the Matchmaking Server. Many fail in connecting...
- And then there is Modern Warfare 2 for the PC. No Demonware-IWNET server crashed but it didn't work as planned. The amount of players was much lower then expected. (dedicated servers boycot) and... STEAM kept all busy. Because next to a connection to a master server you now must be connected to STEAM as well. And STEAM is this wonderful service that can verify and auto-update your MW2 software on your PC. And so many PC gamers never made it passed the verifying stage.
PC MW2 LIST of NONO's
- Verify Game Cache, Local Files” tab and verify, Enable Steam-community in game, ClientRegistry.blob, Steam Error - 55.... Thousands of players had to search the internet for help before they could finally play MW2.
- Now the PC gamer has two annoying services that can be not working properly or even be down. And that is what the PC players had to put up with in the last 2 weeks. No Multiplayer or no multiplayer AND singleplayer when STEAM is down.
- Having P2P servers is a nightmare for most PC players. And with Matchmaking throwing you in a server at the other side of the globe things are even worse then ever imagined.
- Plus when players leave a game you now never get any replacements. So you have to wait till the game ends and then you get some fresh players in. This can be very boring. But you wait because there is no fast switching of servers....
- Forced to be the host of a game can be nightmare if you have a monthly transfer limit.
- PC's have virus scanners. And with every (secret) auto update by STEAM people are getting warning screens from their virus scanners. For the first time many PC owners had to open up their ports to be able to play a P2P CoD title and they dont like this at all. Because, next to playing games, a PC is also used for personal stuff; like banking and shopping. Most PC's are no "entertainment only" boxes.
I guess Infinity Ward has forgotten how important dedicated servers really are when it comes to online gaming !
